An innovative technology developed in cooperation with twelve companies and four standards organizations is finally putting an end to this: with the Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer, or\u00a0<strong>Ethernet-APL<\/strong>\u00a0for short,\u00a0<strong>seamless, network-based communication\u00a0<\/strong>from the\u00a0field to the enterprise level is making its way into process automation. And with the\u00a0<strong>Ethernet-APL field switch<\/strong>, Pepperl+Fuchs is now presenting the first product worldwide that enables\u00a0<strong>direct, fast, barrier-free<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>access<\/strong>\u00a0to and from the field instrumentation\u00a0via Ethernet-APL. At ACHEMA Pulse on June 15 and 16, the FieldConnex\u00ae innovation will be introduced.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, users in process plants are able to use well-known and field-proven\u00a0<strong>Ethernet-based protocols<\/strong>\u00a0such as PROFINET, EtherNet\/IP or OPC UA\u00a0beyond the control room\u00a0<strong>in the entire plant<\/strong>. This opens up completely\u00a0<strong>new applications<\/strong>\u00a0for the process industry, such as those increasingly required in the context of Industry 4.0. But it also results in new\u00a0<strong>automated processes<\/strong>\u00a0for how users can work with instrumentation in the field of process plants in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"detail\">\n<h2>Simply Ethernet<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.pepperl-fuchs.com\/singapore\/images_inet_lowres_ZHI\/EC_SS_20200928_01_Ethernet_APL_Overview_Highlights_Benefits_Two_Wire_Cable_rdax_717x342_100.JPG\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"container_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"container_detailtext\">\n<div class=\"detailtext\">\n<p>The simplicity for which\u00a0<strong>Ethernet<\/strong>\u00a0is known as an established\u00a0<strong>communication technology<\/strong>\u00a0in our everyday lives is the focus in the development of Ethernet-APL: the Advanced Physical Layer makes standard Ethernet technologies available for the process industry and meets users&#8217; expectations for\u00a0<strong>simple, straightforward handling<\/strong>. Ethernet-APL is based on the robust and well-known two-wire cable and offers explosion protection with\u00a0<strong>intrinsic safety<\/strong>\u00a0as an integral part.<\/p>\n<p>The existing cabling remains in place for re-use with Ethernet-APL based components, which considerably reduces the effort for\u00a0<strong>modernizations<\/strong>\u00a0or even for a complete\u00a0<strong>migration from fieldbus to Ethernet<\/strong>. And this is where the Ethernet-APL field switch of the FieldConnex\u00a0product family comes into play: in addition to Ethernet-APL, the field switch is the\u00a0product that can optionally handle the Manchester Bus-powered Physical Layer (<strong>MBP<\/strong>) and can thus be configured quite flexibly to the installed base of<strong>\u00a0PROFIBUS PA<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>devices<\/strong>. It thus enables the concurrant\u00a0operation of new APL and existing fieldbus field devices on a common infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container_wrapper\">\n<h2>IIoT-enabled Applications and Even Higher Availability<\/h2>\n<div class=\"container_detailtext\">\n<div class=\"detailimgRight\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.pepperl-fuchs.com\/singapore\/images_inet_lowres_ZHI\/EC_SB_20210409_Ethernet_APL_fieldswitch_control_cabinet_200px.jpg\" alt=\"The Ethernet-APL field switch for installation in control cabinets or field distributors\" \/><br \/>\n<span class=\"detailimgDescription\">The Ethernet-APL field switch for installation in control cabinets or field distributors<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"detailtext\">\n<p>Installation is quick and easy: the interface\u00a0<strong>automatically detects and adapts<\/strong>\u00a0to the communication physics of the connected device. It transmits\u00a0<strong>power and data<\/strong>\u00a0simultaneously on a two-wire cable into hazardous areas, in compliance with the requirements of the process industry. The Switch provides up to 24 ports for connection to APL-capable instruments or already installed field devices.<\/p>\n<p>This gives the user access to\u00a0<strong>multiple process values\u00a0<\/strong>from a field device, such as volume, mass, temperature and density from a flow meter. Through a single infrastructure, the Ethernet-APL field switch makes all data from the diagnostics-enabled and highly configurable devices available to\u00a0<strong>multiple applications simultaneously<\/strong>, enabling\u00a0<strong>predictive maintenance of the device, plant and process<\/strong>.
